2013 Day 2 Pittsburgh!
We received a warm welcome from Mary Weaver at the front desk of University Place Family House (the first of many new faces to be forced to hold the banner). Since 1983 Family House has provided an affordable home away from home to patients and their families seeking medical life-threatening illnesses in Pittsburgh. A big shout out and heart filled thank you to Jackie Rutkowski, Guest Service Coordinator, Jill Curry, General Manager of University Place Family House and Bob Howard, Executive Director of Family House for your gracious and generous hospitality. We met many other staff members and volunteers who took care of our every need and made us feel so welcome and cared for.
Family House University Place opened its doors in June 2009 in the University Club’s former racquet ball courts and locker room. Family House University Place is located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh within walking distance to the local UPMC hospitals.
Family House University Place offers the following amenities:
■A total of 48 beautifully decorated bedrooms with private baths, telephones and televisions
■Handicap accessible rooms
■Centralized kitchen with large cooking and dining areas
■Living room
■T.V. lounge
■Library
■Computers with internet access
■Wireless internet access
Each room has a cubby assigned in the grand kitchen area with plenty of space for storage in one of the three large refrigerators. Traveling with a cooler, we were happy to keep our provisions cool and refreeze our ice packs. Ours is the basket on the bottom shelf. We are particularly fond of Vitaminwater ZERO for hydration (a second to plain water).
After a quick check in we head off to the TRIO picnic through the tunnels and over bridges made of majestic Pittsburgh steel. More to come...check back for captions...sorry we’re behind on our blog but all is well...
Your donations hard at work!
